“My roots in coastal Karnataka run deep,” says Golden Star Ganesh, reflecting on his journey in the Kannada film industry. He remembers how his debut film, Chellata, had a team from Mangaluru, including the director, producer, and music director. Since then, life has always brought him back to the Karavali region. Destiny played a role in his marriage to Shilpa, who is also from the same area. Over time, his connection to Tulu culture and the land of Parashurama Srishti has only strengthened. Ganesh shared his dream of making a Tulu film a reality during an event in Mangaluru three years ago. Now, along with his wife Shilpa, he is excited to work on their Tulu film project.
Ganesh also acknowledges the cultural influence of his mother-in-law, who often shares Tulu plays, Yakshagana performances, and clips from Tulu films with him. He admires the talent in the Tulu industry, particularly praising the actors' impeccable comic timing. Working with actors like Aravind Bolar and Arjun Kapikad has been a privilege for him.
The upcoming project, which will mark Ganesh's debut in Tulu cinema with a cameo appearance, is a collaboration with director Sandeep Bedra, lead actor Nityaprakash Bantwal, scriptwriter Mohan Bhatkal, and cinematographer Santosh Rai Pathaje — all established figures in the film industry. Ganesh, who is fluent in Tulu and has a good understanding of the language, jokes about delivering dialogues in the film.
Shilpa sees the Tulu film as a tribute to her roots and a personal endeavor. Having grown up in Dubai, she recalls watching Tulu dramas at the Town Hall during her visits home. The couple aims to shine a spotlight on Karavali, similar to how Mungaru Male highlighted Coorg."Mangaluru is a region filled with rich cultural and artistic heritage that is largely unexplored. This film aims to shine a spotlight on Mangaluru in a similar way that the successful Kannada film Mungaru Male did for Coorg, highlighting its tourism, art, culture, and the linguistic excellence of Karavali," says Shilpa.
